Who is the qualification for?

This qualification is appropriate for you if you are, or want to become, a technician, manager or network designer and need an introduction to the area.

How is the course assessed?

This qualification is assessed by a practical test and also by an online multiple choice test. Doing the multiple choice tests online will mean you get an instant result - no weeks of anxious waiting.

How will the qualification improve my career prospects?

Whenever you pick up a phone, use a computer, surf the internet or watch digital television, you are using copper or fibre-optic communications cabling. However, this cabling doesn't install itself. It takes skilled and well trained professionals to do that, and as communications cabling becomes more and more common, it will take even more of them. It's a growth industry with plenty of potential for you to develop a rewarding and challenging career

What will I study on the course?

To gain the full qualification two units must be completed.

Mandatory unit
  • Unit 1: Basic principles of communication systems.  This unit takes 3 days to complete. However, it can be incorporated with any of the other units.
Optional units
  • Unit 2: Fibre optic cabling in an internal environment.
  • Unit 3: Fibre optic cabling in an external environment.
  • Unit 4: Copper cabling in an internal environment.

These units are each five days in duration.
