The Telecoms & Electronic Security sector employs some 300,000 in the UK alone and military skills are much in demand…

Telecommunications, by definition is the provision of products and services for the transmission of voice and data communications, but this is an ever-evolving and developing sector. Driven by advances in communications technology, notably the Internet, broadband, digital television and mobile phones, the Telecoms industry is fast becoming indistinguishable from the IT industry in terms of the skills required and the job roles within it.

There are approximately 8,500 businesses in the UK manufacturing telecoms products and providing telecoms services. Recent broadband, mobile and wireless technology has changed the face of both business and home life. Services are tending towards integration whereby a range of communications products is provided from single suppliers (TV, radio, telephone, broadband etc] through one access portal.

Electronic Security Systems, many people protect themselves, their families, their businesses and their property by employing security systems to safeguard them against criminal and terrorist threats. This means that security is currently high on the UK agenda and, as a result, the market is strong and expanding, and offers a host of roles to those looking to work in this diverse sector. During resettlement there is a range of intruder alarm and security systems installation courses available. Modules take the novice from the most basic level, through intruder alarms, to access control and CCTV, and will provide sufficient knowledge & skills to work within the sector.

Recognising your military skills

Service Leavers are an extremely attractive proposition to employers within the Telecoms & Electronic Security Systems sector. Clearly the three Services have specialists in the field of communications (the Royal Signals being an obvious example) and these people will find their skills eminently transferable to telecoms/Electronic Security Systems careers in civvy street. However, just about any military man or woman with a sound technical background can be trained to perform a role within the telecoms/Electronic Security Systems industry in one capacity or another.
